About the project

Storebrand delivers monthly cost and investment reports to large institutional clients. The reports had an outdated design, inconsistent data, lacked accessibility, and required significant manual effort to produce.

The goal of the project was to improve the user experience while reducing internal frustration and costs, by strengthening the data foundation and developing a new tool for modular report design.

What I did

  • Gathered insights through internal interviews and close collaboration with subject matter experts, to build a holistic understanding of needs, data and workflows, and to identify the root causes of errors and inefficiency.
  • Took a leading role in document accessibility, both to meet compliance requirements and to create a better product for all users.
  • Created early sketches and concepts for development, and worked closely with developers to ensure cohesive design and accessibility implementation.
  • Improved readability through clear structure, typography and contrast, and designed the reports in line with Storebrand's brand guidelines for recognition and a coherent identity.
  • Planned a modular report structure to reduce manual work and enable reuse.

Challenges

  • No direct access to end clients.
  • Difficult to achieve full accessibility compliance for code-generated PDF files.
  • Many different needs and wishes, both internally and from clients.
  • A long-term project with an uncertain timeline meant decisions often took a long time.

Results and reflections

The project demonstrated how important close collaboration with developers is when finding good solutions within technical constraints. To ensure accessibility, we ended up supplementing the PDF with a web-based alternative where full accessibility could be achieved.

Limited access to clients also meant that collaboration with subject matter experts, particularly in accounting, became crucial for understanding needs. At the same time, I developed a clear role in the accessibility work on documents and contributed to spreading that knowledge internally.
